Best Practices for Plugins

Before proceeding to the installation guide for your specific plugin, it may be helpful to review a list of best practices that can be applied to all Splitit plugins.

1. Find Your Guide and Choose Your Checkout Setup

  • Locate the installation guide for your respective platform:
    • Choose between guides for WooCommerce, Shopify (two options), Magento, BigCommerce, Wix, Salesforce, and SAP Commerce Cloud
  • Customize plugin settings:
    • Review the available customization options
    • Adjust the number of payments and set Splitit as the primary payment option by reordering the list
  • Enable On-Site Messaging:
    • Activate On-Site Messaging directly from the plugin's interface to highlight the benefits of flexible installment payment options and drive customer engagement
  • Carefully Consider Access:
    • Make sure that only the correct people in your organization have access to the plugin

2. Customize On-Site Messaging

  • Follow Splitit's On-Site Messaging best practices
    • Make sure to review Shopper Messaging for an overview of messaging
    • Then follow best practices as detailed in the documentation
    • Keep in mind that all Splitit plugins and extensions allow you to enable messaging directly from the app
  • Customize:
    • Tailor your messaging: emphasize the advantages of installment payments for your shoppers
    • Adjust visual style, placement, and timing to ensure the messaging integrates seamlessly with your website’s layout, without disrupting the user experience

3. Test and Validate

  • Enable Test Mode:
    • Enable test mode in the plugin to simulate transactions prior to going live
    • Learn more about testing and negative testing here
  • Validate Your Workflow:
    • Place test orders to verify that the installment plan workflow functions as expected
  • Verify On-Site Messaging:
    • Confirm that Splitit messaging displays correctly on your product, collection, cart, and checkout pages
  • Create a dedicated financing page
    • Expand the section below to learn more about dedicated financing pages

How to Create a Dedicated Financing Page

  1. A dedicated financing page should show all of the available payment options for your store. Below is an example:

    get splitit
  2. The Splitit panel should link to a Splitit information page with a text similar to the following:

"When you buy using Splitit, the retailer takes your first payment straight away (this may be later if your goods are being shipped later). The rest of your monthly payments are automatically taken on the same date as your first one. This date cannot be changed. Monthly payments show as "charged" or "posted" on your account.

In addition to the first monthly payment, we may authorize your card to check that you have funds available. This authorization is usually released shortly afterwards, but while it is active, it temporarily reduces your available funds. Once the amount on hold is released, your funds will be available again on your card. Authorizations show as "pending" or "reserved" on your account.

If a monthly payment is declined, we will email you to let you know. You will need to resolve this with your bank/card provider or by changing your payment card to a different one. We will continue to try the declined transaction until it is successful.

If you have missed multiple payments, we reserve the right to charge your card with all of the missed payments at the same time to bring your plan back up to date.

Please note that debit cards are not valid for the Splitit payment option. Also please ensure that your credit limit is sufficient, otherwise your order will not be successful."

  3. Somewhere on the page, you should also link to Splitit's support page.

4. Go Live and Monitor Performance

  • Activate Live Mode:
    • Disable test mode and switch to live mode once testing is complete
  • Monitor Performance:
    • Use your account on Splitit’s Merchant Hub to access transaction insights and reporting

5. Periodically Check For Plugin Updates

  • Check for updates either within your e-commerce platform, by a direct link to the respective plugin's store, or by contacting support:
